The 17 day diet is fast becoming an internet sensation rivaling the viral power of YouTube.  After introductions on Dr. Phil and The Doctors, Dr. Mike Moreno and his book, The 17 Day Diet, are an internet phenomenon.  Already a best seller, the blogosphere has made this low fat diet, the hottest weight loss plan around.

Divided into 4 – 17 days cycles, the diet promises dramatic results.  Each one of the 4 parts of the plan is designed to jump-start, and keep in high gear, the body’s metabolism by switching gears every 17 days.  According to Dr. Mike, it takes the body 21 days to become accustomed to a new diet.  The body tries to make the necessary adjustments within that 3 week period to function normally.  To change the diet before the body adjusts, keeps the body guessing and working to maintain a sense of normalcy.   By the end of the 4th 17 day cycle, healthy eating patterns should be properly set and the body will not only adjust but thrive.

The 4 Cycles Of The 17 Day Diet Are Described As:

  1. 1. Accelerate

This is the first phase where you reduce the intake of carbs and clear out the sugars. This promotes the burning of fat, cleansing, and rapid weight loss.

  1. 2. Activate

During this phase, carbs are cycled through the diet which resets the metabolism, stimulates fat burning.  By cycling this way, diet plateaus are avoided.

  1. 3. Achieve

Learn how to develop healthy eating patterns and re-introduce previously restricted foods back into the diet in a healthy way.

  1. 4. Arrive

This final phase teaches you how to maintain the healthy eating patterns throughout your life.  Integrating healthy eating during the week but allowing for some of your favorites with a little indulgence on the weekends.

Throughout each of the 17 day cycles, an exercise regimen, of 17 minutes, for at least 6 days a week, is required.  The first phase starts with a simple 17 minute daily walk.  Each cycle increases the amount of physical activity until by the end of the 4th cycle; a simple 17 minute daily workout has become habit and an integral part of your day.  An exercise DVD is also for sale with the book on the internet.

As With Any New Diet, Diet & Nutritional Experts Give Mixed Reviews.

Pros:

  • Variety in the plan keeps the diet from becoming monotonous and tedious. Since the cycles are broken into 4 parts, it appears easier to achieve the short term goals.
  • The exercise programs may be short but they are very effective.
  • Carb and calorie cycling really help to burn to fat.
  • Although the first phase promotes rapid weight loss, it isn’t prolonged or endangering to a healthy life style.
  • The emphasis on long term healthy eating patterns is essential for keeping the weight off permanently.
  • The diet doesn’t totally cut off a major source of nutrition but instead concentrates on shifting meal plans and encouraging a wide variety of natural and unprocessed foods.  The diet plan is safe and effective.

Cons:

  • The 17 Day Diet is not suitable for diabetics.
  • The science of the effectiveness of cycling calories and carbs isn’t proven.
  • The restrictions and cleansing involved in the first phase can throw your body into starvation mode and backfire by slowing down your metabolism.
  • The plan sounds complicated.  Following the plan takes real focus and determination.
  • The psychological factors involved in weight loss are not addressed adequately.

Meal plans are offered for sale as well as the book and exercise videos.  Marketing of the diet and accompanying products is online sales only.  Nevertheless, the 17 Day Diet plan has swept the net and offers quick weight loss with continued nutrition.  Dieters must understand that true weight loss and healthy eating patterns are lifestyles choices that will need to be changed in order to maintain successful weight loss.
