<body>In <em>Science Translational Medicine,</em> scientists at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center recently reported on experiments with a new drug that might be able to cure obesity. Although the drug hasn&#8217;t been tested yet in humans, it&#8217;s been tested on monkeys, and so far, it&#8217;s working for them. The monkeys lost weight in their waistline and their body mass index (BMI) was healthier than in those that didn&#8217;t take the drug. The drug also worked on rodents. While monkeys lost about <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/11/111109143009.htm" target="_blank">11 percent</a>of their body fat, mice lost about 30 percent of their body fat.</p>
<p><strong>How Does It Work?</strong></p>
<p>Most weight-loss drugs on the market work by suppressing appetite or increasing metabolism. This new drug is different. It actually destroys fat cells in the body so that a monkey – or hopefully a human someday soon –can safely lose excess body fat. The drug works by binding to the surface of blood vessels that support fat, and the drug then selectively kills fat cells by cutting off their blood supply. This process yields effects similar to what doctors can do surgically through liposuction, so it&#8217;s especially good news. Once the drug is approved for use in humans, people can gain the benefits of liposuction without having to go through a risky surgical process.</p>
<p>The drug works on a type of fat cell called adipose, or white fat cells, so the researchers are calling it Adipotide. Adipose fat is unhealthy for humans. Too much of it can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in humans. If you already have cancer, obesity can make it less like that chemotherapy or other treatments will be effective.</p>
<p><strong>Will It Really Work In People?</strong></p>
<p>Although there haven&#8217;t been clinical trials of this drug featuring human beings yet, there&#8217;s plenty of reason to be optimistic. Monkeys tend to be obese for the same reasons that humans do – they have too much fat tissue. Since the monkeys lost about 11 percent of their body weight through taking the drug, it&#8217;s likely people will have similar effects.</p>
<p>The research is especially promising because of the mechanism by which the drug works. Although monkeys and humans have similar fat tissue composition, the way appetite and metabolism works in these animals is different from humans. For this reason, drugs that were effective for helping monkeys eat less or metabolize their food more quickly didn&#8217;t work well in human beings. Fat tissue in monkeys, on the other hand, is made of the same type of cells as the fat tissue in human beings. So, if the drug helps monkeys, it&#8217;s likely to help humans as well.</p>
<p><strong>When Will The Drug Be Available?<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10939" title="0003475405YY-849x565" src="http://www.lowfatdietplan.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0003475405YY-849x565-200x133.jpg" alt="0003475405YY 849x565 200x133" width="200" height="133" /></strong></p>
<p>The researchers who pioneered the monkey and rodent studies are planning a pilot study to help prostate cancer patients lose weight. The study will allow obese prostate cancer patients to take the drug for 28 days. The researchers want to look not only at whether the patients&#8217; white fat, especially their abdominal fat, decreases, but also at whether patients who take the drug react better to the cancer treatments than patients who don&#8217;t take the drug. The researchers don&#8217;t currently have an estimated date for the end of the study or a current plan to gain <a href="http://www.fda.gov/drugs/developmentapprovalprocess/default.htm" target="_blank">FDA approval</a>. After a drug goes through clinical trials, it must go through the rest of the approval process before it can be prescribed to patients outside of clinic trials. FDA approval often takes five to seven years, so the drug probably won&#8217;t be on the market before the beginning of the next decade.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/d6MX-l_f6Ok/2.jpg" border="0" alt="2" align="left" title="" />This weekend I went to the farmers market and found some really cool things I wanted to share with you.  These are things you probably don&#8217;t even think of when you go to the grocery store.  Were going to talk about green leafy vegetables.  Green leafy foods are very high-energy super-foods you want to add to your diet.  They contain amino acids, protein, low in calories and high in minerals.  I&#8217;m going to start with carrots.</p>
<p>These are organic and as you can see one of them is purple and one is orange.  From what I have learned, the color was changed to the orange that we are all familiar with because the color was more appealing to people.  There are a lot of greens connected to the carrot and these are actually edible.  The greens actually contain more vitamins and amino acids than the carrots themselves!</p>
<p>The carrot itself contains more starch, sugar and carbohydrates.  That is the main reason people are attracted to eating the carrot alone because of the sweet flavor.  I found some other greens that you will probably only find at a farmers market.  You can add them to your stir fry or steam them.  You can really find some wonderful varieties of greens when you go to farmers markets that are organic and locally grown which also benefits the environment.  I have broccoli greens which have a little bit of the broccoli started there.</p>
<p>If you get greens before they are fully mature, they are easier to digest and their flavors are a bit more softer and subtle.  I actually have no idea what the next green is, but it tastes great!  When you go to these markets, just break off a tiny bit to try it and see if you like it.  That way you can try it out and make sure its something youll enjoy eating.  A lot of people get bored with your typical greens, so this is a great way to add some variety into your diet and also to ensure you are getting good balance of amino acids and vitamins like A, K and C.  One leafy green vegetable may have a particular array of amino acids and another might compliment that one with others.</p>
<p>You can put these into your salads, soups and even your smoothies!  My suggestion to you is to go out and try a variety of greens and see what you like so you can start adding them into your diet.  Try one new leafy green vegetable per week in your diet to start.  One more thing, I have made some curried broccoli &amp; baby green broccoli.  My husband has to have this every week, so I&#8217;ve even gotten him hooked on the greens!!  Keep your comments and questions coming and let me know how you have incorporated greens into your diet!!  Eat your greens and let your mom know you are eating them!
